She was not born to be bound by any conventional rules. Emerging simultaneously as a poet, a university vice-chancellor, the leader of a multi-million-dollar conglomerate, and the first-ever female leader of Bangladesh's ready-made garment (RMG) sector, her life is not a typical story of success. It is a magical fairytale of unyielding grit, of transforming profound grief into strength, and of reinventing oneself time and again.
The journey of Rubana Huq did not originate in today’s air-conditioned corporate boardrooms. Born on a winter morning on February 9, 1964, her truest internal passion lay in literature and learning. While completing her schooling at Viqarunnisa Noon School and Holy Cross College, and subsequently pursuing her studies in English Literature at Dhaka University, words played constantly inside her mind. Later on, she earned her Master's degree from East West University. When she began her professional career as a schoolteacher—immersed in the classroom chalk dust and the lively chatter of students—who could have foreseen that this very woman would one day sit across the table from powerful global buyers, fiercely negotiating international trade deals?
Her connection to literature was so profound that in 2006, she won the prestigious SAARC Literary Award for her poetry. Her published book of poems, Time of My Life, and Monsoon Letters, a literary magazine she founded to showcase talented Bangladeshi writers, prove that she never allowed her tender poetic soul to fade amidst the chaos of the corporate world. To expand her academic horizon even further, she later earned a PhD in English Literature from the historic Jadavpur University in India, adding the title of "Doctor" to her name. During this era, she also ventured into broadcast media, leading as the CEO of TV Southasia from 2006 to 2010.
Yet, destiny was preparing a monumental and painful trial for her. She was the life partner of the late, immensely popular entrepreneur and Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation, Annisul Huq. Though she had been steering the Mohammadi Group alongside her husband as its Managing Director since 1995, the sudden and tragic passing of Annisul Huq in 2017 plunged her into a deep, dark abyss. In a single moment, she lost the greatest anchor of her life. But it was precisely from those shadows that the world witnessed the true rise of Rubana Huq.
Transforming her crushing grief into an extraordinary force, she stepped up as the Chairperson of Mohammadi Group. Wiping away her tears, she took charge firmly to protect the livelihoods of thousands of factory workers and keep the wheels of the multi-sector conglomerate turning smoothly. Just two years later, in 2019, she scripted history by being elected as the first-ever female President of the BGMEA (Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association) in its 41-year history. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and threatened to devastate the entire garments industry, she stood tall on the global stage, fighting relentlessly against international brands to protect workers' rights and preserve their jobs. Her leadership expanded worldwide when she was chosen to represent global manufacturers on the board of the UNFCCC Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action.
Even after scaling the absolute peaks of the business world, the eternal educator within her refused to sit idle. On February 15, 2022, she made a phenomenal return to academia by accepting the role of Vice-Chancellor at the prestigious Asian University for Women (AUW) in Chattogram. Becoming the leader of an international institution dedicated to the higher education of marginalized and resilient young women from across Asia, including Afghanistan, added a transformative dimension to the educational sector. Most notably, under her direct guidance, the university flourished with the Pathways for Promise program—a groundbreaking initiative that allows remarkably talented female workers from Bangladesh's RMG factories to leave the assembly lines behind and pursue a fully funded higher education at this international university.

Furthermore, she has extended her visionary insights globally as an Associate at the Harvard University Asia Center and as an Executive-in-Residence at the NYU Stern School of Business.
